The Natural Bed Essentials Guide: Building a Healthier Bed From the Inside Out

When creating a healthier sleep environment, the sheets touching your skin are only the beginning. Your mattress, pillow and duvet all shape how your bed feels and how comfortably you sleep—and because you spend roughly a third of your life in bed, what goes inside these essentials matters.

At Coyuchi, we use certified organic cotton, natural wool, organic latex and responsibly sourced down instead of synthetic foams, polyester fills and harsh chemical finishes. Thoughtful craftsmanship turns these natural materials into high-quality essentials designed for deeper, more restorative sleep and years of use.

Why Natural Materials Matter

Natural materials offer performance benefits that synthetic fills and foams often try to imitate. Wool helps regulate temperature and moisture, latex provides resilient support, down delivers lightweight warmth and loft and organic cotton adds breathable softness.

They also help reduce exposure to unnecessary synthetics, harsh chemical finishes, flame retardants and microplastics, all of which can have harmful health effects. Conventional bed essentials often contains these, and are traditionally made with polyester alternatives. And anytime you see the word “polyester”, that means it contains plastic and even sometimes petroleum.

According to the National Library of Medicine, these minute plastic particles have the potential to disturb various bodily systems, including the digestive, respiratory, endocrine, reproductive and immune systems. Polyester is also known for tapping heat, making it extremely challenging to stay cool at night.

Natural fibers are not only breathable, they feature zero plastics, toxins or harsh chemicals.  This makes them a safer choice for sensitive skin and anyone looking to create a healthier sleep environment.

Start With an Organic Mattress

Both Coyuchi REM mattresses are made with certified organic cotton and wool, plus natural latex, for breathable, supportive comfort without the synthetic foams and glues found in conventional mattresses.

The foam in many mattresses emits potentially harmful volatile organic compounds, according to the Environmental Working Group. Exposure can cause respiratory irritation, trigger asthma symptoms and, over the long term, increase the risk of cancer. Some mattresses may even contain fiberglass, acting as an affordable, chemical-free fire retardant, as noted by Sleep Foundation.

With Coyuchi mattresses, you can be confident that your entire sleep foundation is made with natural materials and free from any of those harmful additives. We have two mattress designs to choose from:

Add a mattress topper or Down Featherbed to further customize your comfort and support.

Choose the Right Pillow and Duvet Insert

Once your mattress is set, choose the pillow and duvet insert that suit the way you sleep. The fill determines everything from loft and support to warmth and breathability.

Down is soft, airy and lightweight. When comparing down, look at fill power, which measures loft and quality. The higher the fill power, the more warmth and volume it can provide with less weight.

Our ultra-premium European Goose Down pillows and duvet insert feature 800-fill-power down for an especially lofty, luxurious feel, while our classic Down Pillows and duvet inserts use 600-fill-power down for soft, versatile comfort. We also wash our down using a specialized process to minimize allergens, making it hypoallergenic and suitable for most sleepers.

For those sensitive to down, or anyone who prefers a different feel, latex and wool are natural alternatives. GOLS-certified organic latex offers resilient, responsive support and holds its shape over time, while washable wool provides breathable, even warmth and helps regulate temperature throughout the night.
